Is Nail Biting Bad for Your Teeth?

Nail biting is a relatively common habit that affects people of all ages. There are many theories as to why people bite their nails, but most agree that it often stems from stress or may be an activity that is picked up as a child. At Cadena Dentistry, we want you to be aware that nail biting can cause dental problems and as much as we love to see you at the office, we’d like to save you from costly invasive procedures in the future.

When you bite your nails, your teeth are constantly chewing and this can interfere with dental occlusion. Your teeth may shift out of proper position, become misshapen, wear down prematurely, and become weakened if you bite your nails over time. The Academy of General Dentistry estimates that frequent nail biters may rack up $4,000 in additional dental bills over the course of their lifetime, so think twice before you put those fingers in your mouth.

Patients might find that wearing a mouth guard can reduce nail biting and help prevent further damage to teeth. If you are a nail biter, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at the office, visit www.cadenadentistry.com for more information. To schedule a consultation at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, call 830-775-3322.

Diet and Your Dental Health

For healthy living and for healthy teeth and gums, it’s important to know that what you eat and drink and how frequently you eat and drink can affect your dental health. In fact, if your nutrition is poor, the first signs often show up in your mouth. Bacteria in the mouth convert sugars to carbohydrates from the foods that you eat to acids, and it’s the acids that begin to attack the enamel on your teeth, starting the tooth decay process. Here at Cadena Dentistry we can’t monitor your diet, but we can suggest foods that will benefit your overall oral health.

The best food choices include those from each of the five food groups. These include cheeses, chicken or other meats, nuts and milk. These foods are thought to protect tooth enamel by providing the calcium and phosphorus needed to remineralize teeth (a natural process by which minerals are redeposited in tooth enamel after being removed by acids). Other food choices include firm/crunchy fruits (apples and pears) and vegetables (carrots and celery). These foods have a high water content, which dilutes the effects of the sugars they contain and increases saliva flow which helps protect against decay.

If you have further questions about how your diet relates to your dental health, give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the office, visit www.cadenadentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, call 830-775-3322.

Periodontal Disease and Pregnancy

Pregnant women are particularly prone to periodontal (gum) disease due to hormonal changes associated with pregnancy. Pregnancy may cause unexpected oral health changes due to hormones – particularly an increase in estrogen and progesterone – which can exaggerate the way in which gum disease reacts to plaque. If you are planning to become pregnant or suspect you are already pregnant, it’s important that you visit a dentist at Cadena Dentistry right away.

When plaque isn’t removed, it can cause gingivitis – red, swollen, tender gums that are more likely to bleed. If you already have gingivitis, the condition is likely to worsen during pregnancy. It is very important for expecting mothers to take treatment steps quickly if they have gum disease because they have a six times greater risk of having preterm and low-birth weight babies. To control the amount of plaque in your mouth and to prevent gingivitis, brush your teeth regularly, at least twice a day for two minutes and floss your teeth every day.

If you are pregnant, please let us know at your next dental appointment. If you have questions about pregnancy and oral health, give us a call today. To learn more about the services we provide at the office, visit www.cadenadentistry.com for more information. To schedule a consultation at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, call 830-775-3322.

What Are Dental Cavities?

Dental cavities are holes in teeth caused by tooth decay. Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. Cavities, also called caries, are caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks, and not cleaning your teeth well. You can prevent these cavities by scheduling regular dental every six months with one of our dentists at Cadena Dentistry, reducing your sugar intake, as well as brushing twice a day and flossing daily.

If cavities aren’t treated, they get larger and affect deeper layers of your teeth. Finding cavities in the teeth can be tricky, which is why a dentist should always be involved in diagnosing for cavities. Sometimes, cavities can go unnoticed for weeks or months and your dentist will find them during your regular exam. If you experience sensitivity in your tooth as well as visible holes and pits, give us a call right away to discuss your treatment options.

Regular dental visits and good brushing and flossing habits are your best protection against cavities and tooth decay. To learn more about the services we provide at the office, visit www.cadenadentistry.com for more information. To schedule a consultation at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, call 830-775-3322.

Smoking and Dental Health

Smoking is unhealthy at all costs. It not only can lead to oral and lung cancer in the long run, but its early effects can be cosmetic too. When you smoke, you inhale at least 30 different burning chemicals besides nicotine and tar. These include ammonia, carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. The residue leaves a stain and gradually it becomes noticeable, causing your teeth to harden and turn yellow. Of course the best solution to this problem is to quit smoking, but when you can’t quit cold turkey our staff at Cadena Dentistry can offer a variety of options to esthetically enhance and restore your smile.

People who smoke are more likely to produce bacterial plaque, which leads to gum disease. The gums are affected because smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, so the infected gums don’t heal. Smoking causes people to have more dental plaque and causes gum to disease to get worse more quickly in non-smoking.

If you smoke, it’s important to visit our dental team regularly. People who smoke are more likely to have stained teeth, and therefore may need appointments with the dental hygienist more often. To learn more about the services we provide at the office, visit www.cadenadentistry.com for more information. To schedule a consultation at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, call 830-775-3322.

Cleaning Your Dental Implant

Dental implants are a very common procedure to replace missing teeth. Implants are replacement tooth roots that provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. Because the implant is secured within the jawbone, cleaning your dental implant is critical to avoid infection. Here at Cadena Dentistry our dentists will discuss implant maintenance care once the implants are placed.

Cleaning implant-supported tooth replacements is just as important as cleaning natural teeth, as both depend on healthy surrounding tissues for support. To ensure that the implant lasts as long as they should, some special techniques and efforts are required to keep the implant clean and free of dental plaque. Plaque has the ability to cause infection in the tissues around the implant which will lead to its ultimate failure. Dental implants require the same care as real teeth, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups.

During your professional cleaning, our dental hygienists play an important role in keeping your dental implant infection free. To learn more about dental implants and other services provided at the office, visit www.cadenadentistry.com for more information. To schedule a consultation at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, call 830-775-3322.

ZOOM! Teeth Whitening

There are several causes of tooth discoloration, from the type of food you eat/drink to environmental sources such as excessive fluoride levels in water, toothpaste, etc. Inadequate brushing and flossing to remove plaque and stain-producing substances like coffee and tobacco can also cause tooth discoloration. Here at Cadena Dentistry our dentists can help eliminate tooth discoloration and provide you with the smile of your dreams with the ZOOM! whitening system.

First, one of our dentists will examine your teeth to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for ZOOM! If you proceed, the dentist will then treat your teeth with a light-activated hydrogen peroxide gel. Next, an ultraviolet light apparatus called the ZOOM! Whitespeed, breaks the peroxide down, encouraging penetration. This combination allows us to provide you with teeth that are 6-10 shades whiter in about an hour.

Teeth whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth. If you are searching for a brighter smile, call our office today to discuss your options. To learn more about ZOOM! teeth whitening, visit www.cadenadentistry.com for more information. To schedule a consultation at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, call 830-775-3322.

All-in-One Implants

Dealing with missing teeth is a frustrating experience for many of our patients. They come to our practice looking for a permanent solution, and often choose to get all-in-one implants. These implants help patients replace multiple missing teeth, as opposed to just one. If you have teeth in a row that are missing, you can get them all replaced at the same time, with all-in-one implants.

Dr. Louis Cadena replaces missing teeth by installing a titanium implant into the jawbone of each missing tooth. This acts as a root for the tooth, which then allows a crown to be securely placed on top of it. With all-in-one implants, you will have multiple implants placed at one time.  After the implants have healed, you will then return to our office for your permanent crowns.

Here at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, we provide a permanent solution to multiple missing teeth, without having to choose dentures. When properly cared for, they can last a lifetime. You will feel confident knowing the crowns look just like your natural teeth, and that the implants are permanent. There’s no worry of them moving or falling out. Call our office to schedule a consultation for all-in-one implants.

Brush Your Teeth the Right Way

Brushing your teeth is not just for a whiter smile and fresher breath, it’s important for your overall health. When you brush, you remove plaque – the thin film of bacteria that sticks to your teeth and will cause cavities, gum disease, and if you ignore it long enough, it will cause your teeth to rot and fall out. Everyone knows why they have to brush their teeth, but here at Cadena Dentistry we want you to know how to properly brush them.

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your dental care routine and it takes at least two minutes. To get a feel for the time involved, try using a stopwatch. That way you can physically monitor your time. To properly brush your teeth, use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gum line, hard-to-reach back teeth and areas around fillings, crowns, or other dental restorations. The proper brushing technique includes: placing your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to the gums, gently moving the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes and brushing your tongue to remove bacteria that causes bad breath.

If you need assistance with your dental routine or you need to schedule a checkup, give us a call today! Dental Implants vs. Bridges

If you are an adult that lost a tooth, you can replace it with a dental implant or a bridge. Bridges require sound teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth for placement; this isn’t necessary in the case of dental implants. Depending on the severity of your individual case, here at Cadena Dentistry we can provide you with both options and restore your smile to its fullest potential.

The first thing you notice about a dental implant is how closely it resembles your natural tooth. It replaces the entire missing tooth, including the root, without having to grind the adjacent teeth. Dental implants may be less noticeable and provide a more natural appearance, and provide more efficient chewing than bridges, which may slip. A bridge is a frame on which two crowns and a false tooth are attached. The bridge covers the prepared teeth that are left after grinding. The false tooth then sits in the missing tooth’s space above the gum. Since it does not replace the root of the missing tooth, it’s possible that bone loss can occur. Bridges can be less expensive than dental implants in the long run, however the life span of a bridge is less than that of an implant.

If you need to replace a missing tooth, give us a call today to discuss your options. What is Oral Pathology?

Pathology can be defined as the scientific study of the nature of disease and its causes, processes, development, and consequences. Oral pathology is the specialty that identifies and treats diseases of the mouth and maxillofacial region. Some of the diseases that our doctors at Cadena Dentistry diagnose include mouth and throat cancer, mumps, salivary gland disorders, ulcers, and more.

When an abnormality is discovered either by the patient, dentist or other healthcare provider, a referral is often made to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Diagnosis is completed through radiographic, microscopic, biochemical and other in office examinations. Because the mouth is readily accessible, changes indicative of oral cancer or a pathological process can easily be detected in the early stages. Pain is not always necessary to define pathology and is not often associated with oral cancer. However, any patient with facial and/or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer.

If you are concerned about oral cancer, give us a call to discuss your options. To learn more about oral pathology and other services we offer here at Cadena Dentistry visit www.cadenadentistry.com for more information. How to Floss Correctly

Proper flossing removes plaque and food particles in places where a toothbrush cannot easily reach – under the gum line between your teeth. Because plaque build-up can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, daily flossing is highly recommended. Here at Cadena Dentistry, you’ll receive floss in your dental goodie bag after every checkup, so utilize it by following these simple steps.

To receive maximum benefits from flossing, use the following proper technique. Starting with about 18 inches of floss, wind most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with. Holding the floss between your thumbs and index fingers, slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth. Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth, making sure you go beneath the gum line. Never snap or force the floss, as this may cut or bruise delicate gum tissue. Last but not least, make sure you use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth. To remove the floss, use the same back-and-forth motion to bring the floss up and away from the teeth.

Gum Graft

Receded gums are irritating, cause tooth sensitivity and elongated-looking teeth. In the case where gums have receded, it is necessary to correct them for the health of the gums and the teeth. Cadena Dentistry performs gum grafts to correct receded gums right here in our Del Rio, TX dentistry.

Gum grafts take tissue from another area of the mouth and restore the receded gums to their natural state. The tissue is often taken from an area where there is excess gum tissue, the soft palate, or the roof of the mouth. The area where the tissue is taken from often experiences little to no discomfort.

The tissue is then stitched down into place where the gums are receded. This promotes growth, so along with the newly placed tissue, the gums will grow even more into a healthy, natural-looking gum line.

Receded gums can be caused from gum disease, a misaligned bite, or even abrasive brushing. Receded gums can cause a tooth to fall out if they are not corrected. They also expose the tooth’s root, so the teeth are often sensitive to heat, cold, and other changes to the mouth.

If receded gums are irritating you, do not wait to schedule a consultation with us. For more information about gum grafting or to schedule an appointment, call Cadena Dentistry of Del Rio, TX at (830) 775-3322 or visit our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Canine Exposure

Canine teeth are important for eating. They are meant to grasp food and tear into it. When canine teeth are impacted, they affect the way you eat, the aesthetic appearance of your smile and they can harm other teeth. Cadena Dentistry here in Del Rio, TX performs canine exposure so that an impacted canine can grow in normally.

When a canine tooth is impacted, that means it cannot emerge fully because it is trapped within the jaw bone or surrounding tissue. Canine teeth are one of the most common teeth to become impacted. When the canine teeth do not fully emerge, they can erode other teeth and may cause them damage. In addition, some impacted canines have caused cysts to grow over the site, which need to be removed for the health and function of your mouth. Even if the tooth is not causing any problems, leaving a baby tooth or a gap there can often diminish the perfect smile so many desire.

To allow the tooth to grow in properly, your dentist will make an incision in the gums where the canine is stuck. This allows a clear path for the tooth to grow through. A dental brace will also be attached to the tooth to guide it down into the right position.

Impacted canines do not have to cause you trouble or affect your smile. If you suspect impacted canines, come into our Del Rio, TX dentistry for a consultation. To schedule, call Cadena Dentistry at (830) 775-3322 or visit our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Arestin For Proactive Gum Disease Treatment

When gum disease plagues you with irritation and pain, you want procedures performed with high success rates and the most advanced treatments.  We know how frustrating gum disease is to deal with, which is why here at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX we utilize Arestin, an antibiotic applied right to the site of gum disease.

Arestin is made of microscopic spheres that dissolve on their own, so there is no need to take them out like with antibiotics of the past. Arestin is applied to the deep gum pockets after a scaling and planing. Arestin has shown to clear up gum disease better than a scaling and planing alone. When bacteria are left deep down in the gum pockets, Arestin works around the clock to kill them. Arestin is time-released so it keeps working long after it has been applied.

When plaque and tartar irritate the gums, they begin to form deep pockets, which cause the gums to recede. This is when the bacteria reach deep down into the gums near the tooth’s root. Gum disease is the number one reason for adult tooth loss.

If you are frustrated with the pain and irritation of gum disease, it is time to take a proactive approach. Ask Cadena Dentistry about Arestin. We are located in Del Rio, TX and appointments can be made by calling (830) 775-3322 or by going to our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Frenectomy Performed with a Laser

Lip tie and tongue tie can cause severe problems in babies and continued difficulties in adulthood. To free the lips and tongue, a frenectomy is needed to allow the frenulum to heal with more range. Here at our Del Rio, TX dental practice, Cadena Dentistry, we are trained and skilled at performing frenectomies.

The frenectomy is performed by using a laser to detach the shortened or tightened frenulum. Using a laser provides less discomfort than a scalpel or scissors and a faster healing time.  There are also no stitches needed afterward. Often, only a local anesthetic is needed to numb the area. The procedure is performed in less than fifteen minutes. When the frenulum heals, it will have with more range.

When a tightened or shortened frenulum causes the lips or tongue limited motion, this causes immediate difficulties for babies nursing. They are unable to latch correctly and suffer from the consequences. Babies who have difficulty latching often do not gain enough weight. The mothers also suffer with blockage and injury to their milk ducts. Later on in life, as a child or an adult, lip tie and tongue tie can affect the ability to speak, eat, keep good oral health, and other activities.

A short or tight frenulum can cause major difficulties in life, but it doesn’t have to last forever. To learn more about frenectomy, call Cadena Dentistry of Del Rio, TX at (830) 775-3322 or visit our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Full and Partial Dentures at Cadena Dentistry

Dentures are a great option for those who need to replace their teeth, but want a removable option. Here at Cadena Dentistry, of Del Rio, TX we offer our patients with missing teeth full and partial dentures.

Full dentures are a brand-new set of teeth. The teeth are created by taking measurements of your mouth and finding a natural fit. They are made to be the best and most natural looking smile for each individual patient. For full dentures, we can provide both conventional and immediate. The benefit to immediate dentures is that there is no time spent without teeth. However, if extractions were made to place them, a future visit will be required to re-fit the dentures. As the gums heal, they can shrink and change shape. For conventional dentures, we wait a few months for your gums to heal before we fit the dentures.

Here at Cadena Dentistry, we also provide partial dentures. Partial dentures are sort of like bridges, in that they use other teeth to stabilize the dentures. However, unlike bridges, partial dentures are removable.

Dentures are to be taken care of like regular teeth. They need to be brushed before taken out of your mouth to remove plaque, just like normal teeth. When they are not in use, store the dentures in room temperature water.

To find out if dentures are right for you, schedule a consultation at Cadena Dentistry of Del Rio, TX by calling us at (830) 775-3322 or visiting our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Dental Crowns to Restore and Protect

Restoring a weak tooth prevents further damage, infection, and pain. It also improves the aesthetic look of your smile. To repair teeth weakened by damage or decay, we offer dental crowns in our Del Rio, TX dental practice, Cadena Dentistry.

When a tooth is fractured or decayed, this can allow bacteria to reach the inside of the tooth and affect the dental pulp. Being the nerve center of the tooth, when the dental pulp becomes infected it can be quite painful. To clear the infection a root canal is needed, and often a crown will be placed to ensure it does not continue to happen. When a tooth is weak, why not protect it from the start and avoid the pain? A dental crown is like a cap that goes over your tooth restoring its strength. It will also improve the look of your smile.

Dental crowns can be made of gold, porcelain fused to metal, or full porcelain. The options with porcelain are made to look just like your natural teeth, so you won’t be able to tell there is a crown. The crowns are made in a dental laboratory and cemented onto the tooth that has been reshaped to fit it.

If you are looking to protect a tooth or improve the look of your smile, schedule a consultation with us a Cadena Dentistry of Del Rio, TX to see if a dental crown can work for you. To schedule an appointment, call us at (830) 775-3322 or visit our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Dental Bonding to Fix Cracks, Gaps, and Whiten

A chip in your tooth or a discolored smile can plummet confidence. This is why Cadena Dentistry here in Del Rio, TX offers dental bonding as a fast, affordable, and natural looking fix.

Dental bonding is the process of shaping a tooth-colored composite resin to fill in cracks, gaps, or misshapen teeth. It can also be used for long-lasting whitening and brightening. The composite resin is the same material dentists use to fill in cavities. It is a durable material and when taken good care of, it can last for over ten years.

The process of applying bonding first starts with lightly etching the teeth. The very small grooves created aid a strong bond for the resin and the tooth. The tooth-colored resin is then matched to your natural tooth color, or brighter if you are whitening. Your dentist will smooth the resin over your tooth and shape it to make the desired improvement. An ultraviolet light is then used to harden the material.

Taking care of dental bonding is simple and just like taking care of normal teeth. Brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and regular cleanings and exams by your dentist will ensure that the bonding looks good for a long time.

If you have gaps, cracks, or would like long-lasting whitening, schedule a consultation here at Cadena Dentistry of Del Rio, TX. Find out if dental bonding is right for you. To schedule, call us at (830) 775-3322 or visit our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Digital X-Rays Are More Safe and More Effective

Being able to accurately identify and treat our patients is an extremely important process. This is why we choose to use the most advanced technology in our Del Rio, TX dental practice, Cadena Dentistry. Using digital x-ray allows us to do so much more than what was possible in the past.

Instead of taking the x-rays and having them developed in a dark room, the images are instantly displayed on our monitors. This allows us to instantly have a look at the condition of your mouth. This image is also able to be greatly enlarged on the computer screen. Since these images are digital, we can save them, print them, or email them if a second opinion is needed. Software on our computer can also help us detect changes in the x-ray that the naked eye may not be able to catch.

The safety of our patients is also extremely important to us. By choosing the digital x-ray, our patients are subjected to much less radiation than with a standard x-ray.

If you are due for your dental examination and are curious about the safety and what type of x-ray and other equipment we use here at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, feel free to contact us. For more information, call (830) 775-3322 or visit our website, www.cadenadentistry.com.

Extraction Preservation for Healthy and Good Looking Teeth

Extracting teeth is often a necessary procedure to save oral health and to avoid spreading infection. But having a missing tooth is something that must be solved for various oral health reasons. Here at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, we offer several solutions for preserving the site of an extracted tooth.

Traditional implants, mini implants, and dental bridges are all options to replace a missing tooth. Traditional implants are a solution that can last a lifetime. It is a single tooth replacement, so no other teeth are altered in the process. This process takes course over a few months. Mini implants are great for smaller spaces and for creating more stable dentures. They also can usually be placed in one day. Dental bridges are an option where the teeth on either side of the missing tooth are used to create a “bridge”. The two teeth on either side are reshaped to fit crowns, and the replacement tooth is connected in the middle of them.

Invisalign for an Invisable Transition

Straight teeth are a quality many desire, but extremely noticeable and uncomfortable metal braces deter many from achieving the smile they long for. At Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, we offer another option with Invisalign.

Invisalign is a series of nearly invisible trays that gradually straighten your teeth. First, your doctor will take pictures, x-rays, and an impression of your teeth. Using this, an individual treatment plan is created specifically for you. The clear plastic aligners are then created. They are BPA-free, so there is no need to worry about plastic toxins. Not only are these aligner trays nearly invisible, but they do not irritate and callous your cheeks and gums like metal braces do. These aligners are to be worn throughout the day and night, except when eating and brushing your teeth.

Invisalign can improve a variety of cases, including overcrowding, gapped teeth, overbite, underbite, open bite, and crossbite. The length of the treatment plan will depend on each individual case. For adults, a typical treatment time is about a year. For teens, typical treatment time is about two years.

If you have been thinking about straightening your teeth and improving both the aesthetic look of your teeth and your oral health, consider Invisalign. Schedule an appointment with Cadena Dentistry located in Del Rio, TX today to find out if you are a candidate. Call (830) 775-3322 or visit our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Implants to Last a Lifetime

Missing teeth means you bite and chew differently, and maybe even talk differently. There are replacement options, but often they won’t last a lifetime. Wouldn’t a permanent solution be ideal? At Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX, we offer dental implants to replace our patients’ missing teeth that can last a lifetime.

Implants are permanently placed in your mouth. The titanium implant post is placed into the bone socket, where it will bond with the jawbone. This healing process can take between three and six months, so while it is healing, Dr. Cadenas will fit you with temporary crowns. When the permanent and customized crown is ready, an abutment is attached to the implant post. The permanent crown is then cemented into place.

Dental implants are a great option because they don’t require healthy teeth to be reduced in order to place them. Being a single tooth replacement, brushing and flossing is made easier, so oral health is maintained with regular care. With a good oral hygiene routine, implants can last a lifetime.

If you are missing teeth and are interested in finding out more about this permanent solution, schedule an appointment at Cadena Dentistry here in Del Rio, TX. Find out how you can restore a smile and restore your oral health. Call (830) 775-3322 or visit our website, www.cadenadentistry.com

Panorex Imaging Technology

An integral part of any routine dental exam is the dental x-ray or imaging study to view the teeth, gums and tooth roots to identify any structural abnormalities or cavities. While traditional x-rays show a part of your dental health, Drs. Louis H. Cadena and Dr. Valerie Cadena-Vargas utilizes a special imaging tool that tells more of the whole story: the Panorex imaging unit.

When you have an imaging scan with the Panorex camera, you will place your chin on a plastic, shelf-like surface. The Panorex machine will rotate around you in 360-degree fashion, capturing images quickly and quietly. The system then transmits the images to a computer where they are viewed digitally. This reduces the need for extra films and minimizes the level of radiation exposure. The entire imaging process takes roughly 20 seconds to perform.

The resulting image gives Dr. Cadena, Dr. Cadena-Vargas and their team at Cadena Dentistry a complete view of your overall dental structures. They are able to zoom in or adjust the contrast of these images for improved viewing. This gives your dentist the ability to pinpoint infections, cavities and structural issues that may affect your dental health.

Advanced technologies like the Panorex camera are just one of the many ways Drs. Cadena and Cadena-Vargas ensure their Del Rio ,TX patients’ dental health.

STA: Single Tooth Anesthesia

Cadena Dentistry utilizes several dental technologies that improve office visits for Del Rio, TX patients.  Single tooth anesthesia or STA is a dental anesthesia innovation that makes dental injections virtually painless.  It has been named to Dentistry Today’s Top 100 Products list and the Medical Design Excellence Award Winner.  Our dentists, Drs. Louis Cadena and Valeria Cadena-Vargas want their patients to learn more about STA and how it can improve their overall dental care experience

Dental injections to numb the nerves around a tooth are a significant source of dental anxiety or phobia among patients. Our team aims to reduce dental anxiety with the single tooth anesthesia technology. The STA is a small instrument that closely resembles a pen. The anesthetic delivery system is computer-controlled. The STA uses computer sensors to detect pressure. This gives your dentist the ability to adjust to just the right pressure to apply to insert a needle into the gum for numbing.

In addition to the adjustability of the pressure, the dentist can also change the flow rate of the anesthetic medication into the gum. This allows him to determine the appropriate amount of anesthetic that will fully numb your tooth without unnecessarily numbing surrounding teeth, which can increase recovery time. This means you can return to work or school without the dreaded lip numbness, plus your tooth will be repaired and healthy.

When it comes to numbing your tooth and successfully treating a decaying, injured or otherwise damaged tooth, Dr. Cadena and Dr. Cadena-Vargas aim to deliver the most precise injection possible. Thanks to STA dental technology at their Del Rio, TX dentist office, they can accomplish just this.

For more information on single tooth anesthesia or STA at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX call 732-495-4444. To learn more about the numerous technological advancements they offer, visit www.cadenadentistry.com.

Scaling and Root Planing

Dr. Louis H. Cadena and Dr. Valerie Cadena-Vargas of Cadena Dentistry strive to help all their patients in Del Rio, TX maintain optimal oral health and retain all their natural teeth. One of the ways they accomplish this is by treating gum disease and restoring periodontal health with scaling and root planing, which has proven to be an effective and non-invasive way to treat early periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is responsible for 75 percent of all adult tooth loss cases in the United States, and is associated with many chronic diseases, so periodontal health is something our dentists take seriously. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that starts when a build-up of plaque on patients’ teeth hardens into tartar and creates a suitable environment for bacteria to collect and attack the surrounding gums. In its early stages, this gum disease is gingivitis, but if it is left untreated, it becomes periodontis, and periodontis can destroy gum tissue, lead to tooth loss and even result in a loss of bone mass in the jawbone. Heart disease, diabetes and stroke have been linked to poor periodontal health.

Scaling and root planing is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease before it develops into more serious periodontal disease. The procedure allows Dr. Cadena and Dr. Cadena-Vargas to clean between the gums and teeth all the way down to the roots in order to smooth the root structure and remove the tartar that is causing the inflammation.

The procedure is an incredibly effective and can stop the progression gum disease before it irreversibly damages patients’ teeth. Patients who have been diagnosed with gum disease or that have red, swollen or bleeding gums should schedule an appointment with Dr. Louis H. Cadena or Dr. Valerie Cadena-Vargas of Cadena Dentistry by calling 830-775-3322. For more information about the Del Rio, TX dentists and their services, please visit www.cadenadentistry.com.

DentalVibe

Fear of the dentist encompasses more than just the seeing the “white coat” or the thought of being “trapped” in a dentist's chair for several hours. Many people avoid receiving necessary dental work because of the pain associated with an injection of anesthetics into the gums. To help ease pain as well as patient anxiety, Dr. Louis H. Cadena and Dr. Valerie Cadena Vargas now offer the DentalVibe Painless Injection System to eliminate the pain of a numbing injection. This technology works by sending gentle pulsations into the gum tissue where nerve endings sensing these soothing vibrations transmit chemical messages to the brain that tells the brain to inhibit the opening of the “pain gate” responsible for the discomfort of an intraoral tissue injection.

The Dental Vibe device resembles an electric toothbrush in appearance and is equipped with two prongs and a light. Between the prongs is a small area which delivers the numbing agent into the gums. Your dentist here at Cadena Dentistry will inform you when they are getting ready to inject the anesthetic before gently pressing the vibrating prongs against the tissues involved in the dental treatment. This vibration tricks the brain into paying more attention to the vibrations emitted from the DentalVibe device than any discomfort caused by an oral needle.

In addition to helping patients overcome their fear of the dentist, DentalVibe also provides greater reduction of pain for extensive dental treatments involving more than a cavity filling. Moreover, patients anticipating a pain-free dental experience because of Dental Vibe's ability to numb their mouth without inflicting pain are more apt to seek the dental treatments they need to prevent tooth loss, gum disease or periodontitis from severely compromising their oral health.

For more information about the DentalVibe Painless Injection System, visit www.cadenadentistry.com or call 830-775-3322 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Louis H. Cadena or Dr. Valerie Cadena-Vargas at Cadena Dentistry in Del Rio, TX.

Diabetes and Dental Health

Maintaining proper oral hygiene is important for anyone who wants to prevent gum disease. However, people with diabetes need to be especially diligent. According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes are at an increased risk of gum disease.

Our staff at Cadena Dentistry offers a full array of dental services including dental hygiene and periodontal health services in order to help you maintain good oral health. Gum disease and diabetes appear to be connected in a few ways. Fluctuating blood glucose levels are believed to make problems with the gums more likely. In addition, research has indicated gum disease may affect blood sugar levels and even contribute to the progression of diabetes.

At Cadena Dentistry, our experienced staff will help you learn ways to reduce your risk of gum disease. We offer services including periodontal cleanings and individualized treatment plans. Gum disease is a preventable complication of diabetes. For those who already have signs of periodontal disease, the condition is treatable and further progression can be prevented.

Root Canals

Root canals are performed when there is an infection deep within the nerves and root of a tooth. Our dentists Dr. Louis Cadena and Dr. Valerie Cadena Vargas will start by numbing the area with a local anesthetic, and then drills a hole into the tooth to reach the canal. Your doctor will then clean out the infection and infected tissue, and fills up the hole with a material called gutta percha. It is not a difficult or long procedure, but one that is necessary to get rid of the infection and save the tooth.

The root canal procedure is over in about an hour, after which Dr. Cadena recommends the following aftercare instructions:

1) The patient should avoid eating on the tooth for several days as it can be sensitive.

2) After one week, the patient should return to our office to get an impression of the tooth for a permanent crown. We will fit them with a temporary crown.

3) In 1-2 weeks, the patient should return to our office a final time to get the permanent crown bonded to their tooth.

4) Patients must reach us immediately if they notice excessive bleeding, severe pain or a high fever.

5) Patients should take all prescribed medications, including any antibiotics.

To find out more about root canals and how they are performed, call us here Cadena Dentistry at 830-775-3322 to schedule your appointment!

Periodontics: Caring for your gums

Caring for your teeth is an essential part of maintaining good oral health, but your gums also play an important role in your health, and proper care is crucial. Gum disease can be a serious detriment to your oral health and overall wellness, and Dr. Louis H. Cadena of Cadena Dentistry provides the regular periodontal and checkups you need to maintain peak periodontal health and prevent gum disease.

With periodontal disease responsible for 75 percent of all adult tooth loss cases in the United States, it is critical to check for and treat periodontal issues when they first arise. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that starts when a build-up of plaque on your teeth hardens into tartar. As the tartar accumulates, bacteria collect and attack the soft tissue in the surrounding gums. In its early stages, this gum disease is gingivitis, but if it is left untreated, it becomes periodontis. Periodontis can destroy your gum tissue and lead to tooth loss. Periodontis can even result in a loss of bone mass in your jaw bone, and heart disease, diabetes and stroke have also been linked to poor periodontal health.

The state of your gums affects the health of your entire body, so come to our office for periodontal cleanings and treatment. We will make sure your gums are well cared for. Call 830-775-3322 to schedule an appointment. For more information about our practice, visit www.cadenadentistry.com.

ZOOM! Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of many cosmetic dental services we provide here in our Del Rio, TX clinic. Patients come to us with discoloration or staining of their teeth, and can choose from a variety of whitening products. ZOOM! whitening is one of our more popular types of teeth whitening due to the fast results and that it is done in about an hour.

ZOOM! whitening works by first applying a whitening gel, then using a low intensity lamp to shine directly onto the teeth. The light helps activate the whitening gel, which then causes it to seep deep into the tooth enamel. It is a safe and effective process that only takes about an hour in our practice. Many patients get it done during their lunch break, and can go right back to work.

Patients often prefer ZOOM! whitening not just for the quick results, but because it doesn’t leave sensitivity or soreness of the gums — not to mention that it is long-lasting.

If you want to get your teeth whitened through our chair side procedure, schedule a ZOOM! whitening appointment today with our team here at Cadena Dentistry.

Rotary Endodontics

If you’ve had a root canal to save an infected tooth, it probably didn’t occur to you to ask what types of tools your dentist used. However, if your dentist used the old, manual file for removing the infection, the procedure may have been more nerve racking than if rotary endodontics technology was used. That’s why our team here at Cadena Dentistry uses these tools in our office in Del Rio, TX.

Providing a smoother, more comfortable experience during root canals, rotary endodontics technology gives your doctor the ability to remove the infected pulp in the inner root canal more quickly, more smoothly and with less chance of complications. These electric instruments prove superior to the traditional, stainless steel files. They are made of nickel titanium, which is much more flexible than stainless steel, so it can be inserted into the curved root canal without damaging the passageway.

In addition, the tools are much quieter, without the grinding noise that other tools produce, which can help with your nerves during the procedure. This is why both the doctor and patients prefer this technology. While the manual method works adequately at saving teeth during root canals, rotary endodontics tools are much less scary and are easier to use.

We prefer to use this technology at our office in Del Rio, TX because we always put our patients’ first and the tools are smoother, quicker and more consistent than the traditional method. To schedule an appointment, call our office in Del Rio, TX at (830) 775-3322. For more information, visitwww.cadenadentistry.com

Bone Grafting

In some cases, our patients do not have the proper amount of bone mass in their jaw to allow for the placement of dental implants. However, thanks to recent developments in bone grafting, people who would not have qualified a few years ago can now receive dental implants. In Del Rio, TX office, Dr. Louis Cadena, Dr. Valerie Cadena Vargas and Dr. Jerome Gibson perform bone grafting to increase the amount of bone in his patients’ jaw to allow for future implants.

There are several bone grafting techniques, but they can all be grouped into two types. The first type of bone grafting is the most extensive type and is performed only by an oral surgeon. Always done as a surgery separate from dental implant placement, this first type of grafting makes large changes to the shape and size of the dental ridge for the sake of implants, which are usually not implanted until several months later.

The second type of bone grafting is usually performed if the jaw has enough bone for implant placement but not enough to completely cover the sides of the implant. These grafts are usually small and performed when dental implants are placed.

Whether you need bone grafting or not, if you’re looking to receive dental implants, we can make it happen. To schedule an appointment, call our office in Del Rio, TX at (830) 775-3322. For more information, visit www.cadenadentistry.com.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a severe oral health problem that affects about 10% of the population.  Although the infection begins as a minor inflammation, it can quickly escalate into tooth loss, hard tissue damage, and have an effect on your overall systemic health.

Fortunately, it is easy to prevent periodontal disease with diligent oral care.  At Cadena Dentistry, we always remind our patients to brush twice a day, floss and schedule appointments for bi-annual cleanings and exams.  In the event you do find yourself with periodontal disease, it’s important to catch it in its earliest stages.

If you notice any of the following signs of periodontal disease developing, schedule an appointment with us at Cadena Dentistry so you can be proactive about your oral health:
  • Bleeding gums during or after brushing and flossing your teeth
  • Swollen, tender or sore gums
  • Gums that appear to be receding from your teeth
  • Bad breath or a foul taste in your mouth, even after brushing
  • Loose teeth or teeth that can be physically moved in the gum bed
  • Changes in your bite alignment
  • Lack of stability in any restoratives or prosthetic dental work
